Construction Update

When construction began in early January 2008, one of the first items of construction was the relocation of Holt Street, located between Park Avenue and Tidewater Drive. This local street is frequently used by residents who live off Park Avenue and the nearby Ruffner Middle School. During baseball season, Holt Street is used by fans for convenient access to the Tides’ parking lots.

After closing Holt Street, part of the street was demolished to build a different configuration which would allow construction of the piers for the overhead viaduct that will carry the new light rail. A temporary walkway was also installed for safe pedestrian access.

Last week, a new subgrade, a leveled off surface of earth, was constructed and the underlying support of the new roadway will be placed next. New curbs, sidewalks and asphalt pavement will follow this process so that Holt Street can be opened by March 31, 2008. Our goal is to complete these construction activities before the Norfolk Tides’ first home game on April 3.
