Tide Rolls Out First Issue of E-Newsletter

Welcome to the first issue of The Tide E-News, a bi-weekly electronic newsletter dedicated to providing the public with accurate and timely information on topics including light rail construction progress, major traffic alerts, community and business outreach, special events and other important information you need to know.

The Tide, a $232 million project, will extend 7.4 miles from the Eastern Virginia Medical Center through downtown Norfolk on mostly dedicated street right-of-ways then continue east along the I-264 corridor to Newtown Road. The system will include eleven stations, four with park-and-ride facilities. All stations will be accessible to persons with disabilities and feature lighted shelters, ticket vending machines, benches, schedules and maps. Passengers will be able to catch a train every 7.5 minutes during peak hours and every 15 minutes during off peak hours.

The Tide is expected to carry as many as 6,000 to 12,000 riders a day and will connect seamlessly with bus service. HRT is funding the costs of the project in partnership with the Federal Transit Administration, Commonwealth of Virginia, and City of Norfolk. The system will be open to the public in January 2010.
