Construction Update - Holt Street

In the last issue, we reported that one of the first items of construction was the relocation of Holt Street, located between Park Avenue and Tidewater Drive. Following the closure of Holt Street, part of the street was demolished to build a different street layout that would allow construction of the piers for the overhead viaduct that will carry the new light rail.

Since that time the relocation of Holt Street was completed including a new storm drainage system, curb and gutter and the stone base for the new roadway. Backfill material was installed and compacted outside of the street itself for a new sidewalk that will be constructed next week.

The contractor is on schedule to open Holt Street to traffic before March 31, 2008 -- an earlier opening than required for the start of the baseball season.

Other work in the construction site includes the removal of the old freight track from Park and Clairborne Avenues. The contractor has also driven piles for approximately six bridge piers for the light rail trestle and is now forming the first bent near the east abutment adjacent to Norfolk State University.
