Key System Features

Light Rail Vehicles (LRV)

The initial Tide light rail system is comprised of 9 light rail vehicles. Light rail vehicles are part of a modern form of public transportation. The Tide will operate a two car train that runs on tracks in city streets and on dedicated right-of-way. The length of the train will be no longer than a city block so that stopped LRVs do not block intersections. The LRVs will be driven by an on-board train operator and powered by an overhead electrical system, making the system clean and quiet.

Station Amenities

Station amenities will include safety railings, ticket vending and validating machines, maps and information cases, lighting, and other elements such as benches, wind screens or other weather protection, and litter receptacles.

Park-and-Ride Lots

Three park-and-ride locations will provide access to major destinations such as Norfolk State University, Tidewater Community College (Norfolk Campus), Harbor Park, City Hall, MacArthur Center, and the Sentara Norfolk General Hospital.

Bus Connections

The HRT bus system will be revised to provide strong bus connections and extend the service coverage of The Tide light rail system. Seven of the stations will allow passengers a direct connection to the HRT bus system.
